Motorcycle mechanic schools can contribute greatly to road safety by training competent technicians who can ensure that motorbikes are roadworthy. It is a known fact that driving a motorcycle with its rider exposed is far riskier than driving a car. The risks can be minimized with proper driver training and riding with the right equipment such as helmets and body pads.
Another factor that would significantly contribute to safety is having well-maintained motorcycles that pass through the hands of competent mechanics expertly trained in technical schools. A malfunctioning motorbike on the road is a hazard not only for the rider but also for others on the road.
Training motorcycle mechanics usually involves two types of programs. One type covers general training on all types of motorcycles, instructions on the theoretical aspects behind the vehicles’ operations, and hands-on sessions that will develop a mechanic’s ability to diagnose problems and undertake whatever repairs are necessary.
Motorcycle maintenance is also a part of this program in motorcycle mechanic schools, and as such a student mechanic will tackle subjects on motorbike engines, suspension and chassis systems, transmission, as well as fuel and electrical systems. The student will have to master all the mechanisms and parts that go together to make a motorcycle run safely and efficiently, and the many methods by which repairs could be made quickly and effectively.
Another type of motorcycle training is the manufacturer-specific program. This would essentially involve subjects similar to those in the general program. Only this time, the learning process will be focused on specific brands of motorbikes, commonly divided into those manufactured by Asian, European and US motorbike companies. Hence, the students can opt for specializations on such motorcycle brands as Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki, BMW and Harley-Davidson.
If attending some motorcycle mechanic schools is not possible for an individual, he or she can still pursue a career of being a motorbike technician. This can be done through on the job training (OJT). After some time is spent acquiring sufficient OJT experience, a mechanic’s career can be pursued to higher levels through short formal courses or training on new motorcycle models. This career path may take a little longer, but just the same, the mechanic in the end can contribute to more roadworthy motorcycles. At the same time, he or she can enjoy the many employment opportunities for a motorcycle mechanic such as warranty jobs available in top motorcycle makers and in insurance firms.
