Now may be the opportune time to enroll in an auto mechanics college to equip oneself for employment in one of the pre-recession growth drivers of the US economy, the automotive industry. Many government authorities believe that the current global recession may already be showing signs of abating.
In the US, for instance, more than half a million jobs will be created or saved during the next six months, according to a White House forecast. With such signs indicating that the recovery prospects seem to be improving, the demand for auto mechanics could accelerate even further.
Even in this period of economic recession, auto mechanics remain in demand. This is because many car owners just chose have their existing vehicles repaired instead of buying new ones. Graduates from an auto mechanics college are usually employed as technicians and skilled workers at automobile repair shops, car dealerships and service centers, major automakers, among other auto industry-related establishments. Pre-recession employment rate of graduates of auto mechanics courses is close to 85%, a level that is expected to go higher once the current economic difficulties are finally over. On the average, auto mechanics are paid about $11 an hour, a rate that is likewise likely to improve once the economic recovery sets in.
A student of auto mechanics may spend about $3500 for tuition fees plus cost of equipment and supplies to be used for the duration of the course. If a student goes full-time on some auto mechanics courses, graduation will take a year’s time. Those who will study with half of the courses’ load will graduate in two years. Students usually attend three-hour sessions in these courses which in some schools start in the months of September and February.
There are several components to the training programs in an auto mechanics college. One is on basic service which will serve as an introduction to students on how important safety is on the various operations of the auto shop. It will orient students on how to inspect a car and identify possible problems, perform maintenance such as changing oil, and use the different equipment and tools of the trade that will be their partners in a very promising profession.
